Backlogs at ports and border posts are almost always a clearing-agent problem, not a customs problem. Documents filed wrong, permits applied for late, trucks queued without pre-clearance. Our desks work every major Southern African gateway to keep your cargo moving before the queue forms.

Notes & Conditions
The industry's real failure points: wrong HS codes, missed stack/cut-off dates, demurrage nobody was watching, and paperwork submitted too late. Run your shipment through the radar before you dispatch.
Misclassification triggers manual inspection and reassessment — often the single biggest source of unplanned delay.
Documents finalised after the vessel's cut-off mean your cargo rolls to the next sailing, whether or not the goods are ready.
Nobody tracking free time means storage charges accrue silently until the invoice arrives.
A single missing document at the border can hold an entire consignment, not just one line.
Search commonly-imported tariff headings and their indicative South African duty rate. Not your product, or need the exact sub-heading confirmed? Our customs team classifies it correctly, free, as part of any quote.
Indicative General (MFN) rates shown — actual duty depends on country of origin (SADC / EU / UK trade agreements can reduce this to 0%) and exact sub-heading. Confirm with our customs team before shipping.
Enter your reference number and we'll get you a status update directly from the desk handling your cargo — no waiting on hold.
This sends your reference number straight to the desk via WhatsApp for a live human status update.
Most border delays aren't caused by customs — they're caused by clearing agents who file late, misclassify cargo, or leave a truck queued with no pre-cleared paperwork. Emperial exists to be the exception: the gateway into Africa that gets it right the first time.
You deal with one team, start to finish. No chasing multiple providers.
We handle the planning, coordination and paperwork so you focus on growth.
Insured carriers, licensed clearing agents, and full regulatory compliance.
We negotiate the best rates so you benefit from our established network.
Track your cargo at every stage with our integrated reporting systems.
Documents pre-lodged before your cargo arrives. No queued trucks, no last-minute permit scrambles.
Whether one pallet or a project cargo, we grow with your business.
Short, practical lessons on the things that actually cause delays and disputes — written for importers, not customs lawyers. Track your progress as you go.
Importing means bringing goods into South Africa from another country for sale or use. Every import needs a customs code, a correctly classified HS code, and clearance through SARS before goods can leave the port — this is the process a clearing agent manages on your behalf.
A freight forwarder arranges the actual transport of your cargo — booking space on a vessel, aircraft or truck, consolidating cargo, and coordinating the handoffs between origin, port, and final delivery. It's distinct from customs clearing, though most agents (Emperial included) offer both under one roof.
EXW, FOB, CIF, DDP — the eleven Incoterms 2020 rules decide exactly where cost and risk transfer from seller to buyer. Getting this wrong is one of the most common causes of disputed invoices between importer and supplier.
Sea freight is cheaper per kilogram and suits bulk, non-urgent cargo — typically 18-35 days transit depending on origin. Air freight costs far more but moves in days, not weeks, making it the right call for high-value, time-critical, or perishable goods.
Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, SAD500, and a valid customs code registered to the importer — missing any one of these is enough to hold a full consignment at the border.
Customs duty is charged on the customs value (roughly CIF) at a rate set by your HS code. Ad valorem excise applies mainly to vehicles and luxury goods, on top of duty. VAT (15%) is then charged on the value plus duty plus excise combined — not on the goods value alone.
20ft (GP) and 40ft (GP/HQ) general purpose containers cover most cargo. Reefers keep temperature-controlled goods cold, open-tops and flat-racks handle oversized or awkward loads, and LCL (less than container load) lets you share a container's space and cost with other shippers.
Misclassifying goods — even by one digit — can trigger a full customs inspection, back-dated duty reassessment, and penalties. The safest move is always to have a licensed clearing agent classify before you ship, not after.
Shipping lines and terminals allow a fixed number of free days to collect your container before daily storage charges start accruing — often silently, until the invoice arrives. Track the clock from the day of discharge, not the day you notice.
An ITAC import permit and an NRCS/SABS Letter of Authority are both required before a vehicle can be registered in South Africa — and both need to be arranged before the vessel sails, not after it arrives.
Ocean freight liability under most carrier terms is minimal and calculated by weight, not value — meaning a damaged high-value shipment is rarely covered without a separate marine insurance policy.
Hazardous cargo is grouped into nine IMCO/IMDG classes — from explosives to corrosives — each with its own packing, labelling and documentation rules. Declaring the correct UN number and class upfront avoids a shipment being refused at the port.
Every name that appears here has been worked with directly and vetted by Emperial — not a paid directory listing. When we can't cover something ourselves, this is who we hand it to.

Vetted stevedoring and warehouse labour supply for peak-period surge capacity.
Vessel loading and discharge operators at Durban, Cape Town, Ngqura and Richards Bay.
